GAMMA IRRADIATION Gamma Irradiation process is realized by using the gamma rays emitted by Cobalt-60 (Co-60) or Cesium-137 (Cs-137) isotopes. Metallically formed Co-60 rods that are specially produced for this purpose are used as a source in the Gamma-Pak Irradiation Facility. Irradiation Facility consists of Irradiation Cell (Biological Shield), source panel, source storage pool, product carriage and source transition system, warehouse and automatic control system. Irradiation Process is realized in the Irradiation Cell protected by
a biologic shield made of 180 cm thick concrete walls. When the Irradiator
is off, source panel is kept in a 6-meter deep-water pool. In order to
switch on the device to the radiation position, the source is pulled by
means of a pneumatic piston and placed between the tote boxes filled with
products. The products to be exposed to irradiation are put inside the
aluminum boxes with dimensions of 58 x 64 x 124 cm in their own packages
and taken to the irradiation cell by a conveyor system. The boxes filled
with products are moved around the source in stop and go basis and radiated
in 52 different positions and than they are taken outside the radiation
room automatically by the conveyor system. The Radiation Device and conveyor
system are completely controlled by a computer automatically. In the following
figure you can see the general appearance and units contained in the Radiation
Plant.
